BREAK OUT SESSION ONE: 12:45 to 1:45 p.m.

Choose one of the following five sessions;

  • OPTION ONE:The Risky Business of Field Trips with Gary Sylven , Assistant Headmaster, Rundle College Society       Field trips are likely the highest risk activity of any independent school. Gone are the days when a teacher could simply load up a bus and take students to an event. There are now high standards in duty of care and due diligence established through years of legal precedents. To avoid negligence, even the most simple field trip now requires significant risk management, specific parent permission, and crisis response planning. The core elements of every safe field trip will be presented, along with practical templates and exemplars to support any school’s practices.

  • OPTION TWO: Hiring Right: How to improve your chances of hiring great people with Ray Battochio, AISCA Senior Manager and Teacher Certification Coordinator                                                                                                  ( There will be a repeat of this session in Break out Session 2)                                                                                     From creating the job description  to on-boarding the employee, this session will provide an overview of hiring practices that improve your chance of hiring great people.

  • OPTION THREE; Occupatinal Health and Safety: What School Leaders Need to Know with Scott McLarty, Safeside Occupational Health & Safety   (There will be a repeat of session in Break Out Session 2)                                  This workshop will provide an overview of the elements of the regulatory environment governing workplace safety. Participants will learn about their organizations key legislated obligations and changes that took effect June 1, 2018. Please bring a device to access the Alberta OHS Act, Regulation and Code or bring a consolidated hardcopy (hand book or binder) for the session.

  • OPTION FOUR; Home-Based Learning Programs: Current realities and future opportunities! What must actually go into a student’s record, a staff member’s personnel file, and other school document folders? How can our administration keep all of that sensitive data safe?
